Canadian Citizenship Application - Eligibility, Documents, Test

Permanent residents who have lived in Canada long enough can apply to become Canadian citizens. We count your physical presence days, check tax filing and language proof, and prepare the application for you to sign and submit online. Our fee is CAD 500, IRCC fees are paid separately.

Physical presence count - 1,095 days in 5 years
Tax filing and language proof check
Application for adults, families and children

Think you have enough days for citizenship? Write to us - we will check before you apply.

We reply in messengers within one business day.

What we do for your citizenship application

The citizenship application looks simple, but most of the risk sits in one number - your days in Canada. IRCC counts every trip over the last 5 years, and if the count is off, the application can be returned or refused.
So we start with your travel history and tax filing, and only then fill out the application.

We are immigration lawyers with almost 20 years in immigration. We prepare the application and documents, and you sign and submit it in your own online account.

Physical presence

We go through your trips day by day and calculate your physical presence, including half-days for time in Canada before you became a permanent resident, up to 365 days.

Taxes and language

We check whether you had to file Canadian taxes for 3 of the last 5 years, and which language proof you can use if you are 18 to 54.

Application and documents

We prepare the online application, copies of your identity and PR documents, and police certificates or name change documents if you need them.

Test and next steps

We explain what to expect from the citizenship test, interview and ceremony, and help with IRCC requests while you wait.

Who can apply for Canadian citizenship

Marrying a Canadian does not make you a citizen - spouses meet the same requirements as everyone else. The main ones are below.

Main requirements

Permanent resident status
You need valid PR status. An expired PR card is fine, as long as you have not lost your status.
1,095 days in Canada
At least 3 years of physical presence in the 5 years before you sign, with at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Time in prison or on probation does not count.
Taxes, language and test
Canadian taxes filed for 3 of the 5 years if you had to file. Adults 18 to 54 show English or French at CLB 4 and pass the citizenship test.
Children
A child under 18 with a Canadian parent, or a parent applying at the same time, does not need the day count. Others meet the 1,095-day rule themselves.

How the citizenship application works

IRCC processing times change regularly, current ones are on the IRCC processing times page. You can check your own days with the IRCC physical presence calculator.

01
Consultation
We look at your status, trips and taxes, and tell you whether you can apply now or when. A consultation costs CAD 150.
02
Day count
We calculate your physical presence and compare it with the IRCC calculator, so the numbers in the application match.
03
Application
We prepare the application and documents. You sign and submit it online, families can apply as a group.
04
Test and interview
Applicants aged 18 to 54 take the citizenship test. IRCC may also invite you to an interview or ask for fingerprints.
05
Oath
After approval, adults take the oath of citizenship at a ceremony. That is the moment you become a Canadian citizen.

You can travel after you apply, but keep your PR status, answer IRCC letters on time, usually within 30 days, and be in Canada for the test, interview and ceremony.

Common reasons citizenship applications get delayed

Most problems come from the day count and from missing tax returns. This is what we check before you apply.

Applying with exactly 1,095 days - IRCC recommends a margin
Trips missing from the travel history
Taxes not filed for the required years
Language proof that IRCC does not accept
Leaving Canada and missing an IRCC letter or the test

Your PR card expiring soon and citizenship still months away? See PR card renewal - you may need a valid card to travel while you wait.

Answers to frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Canadian citizenship?
At least 1,095 days of physical presence in the 5 years before you sign, including at least 730 days as a permanent resident. IRCC recommends applying with more than 1,095 days in case of a calculation problem.
Do days before I became a permanent resident count?
Partly. Each day in Canada as a visitor, student, worker or protected person counts as half a day, up to 365 days in total.
How much does it cost to apply?
Our fee is CAD 500. IRCC fees are CAD 653 for an adult, including the right of citizenship fee, and CAD 100 for a minor.
Do I need a language test and the citizenship test?
Yes, if you are 18 to 54 on the day you sign. You show English or French at CLB 4 with an accepted certificate, diploma or test, and take the citizenship test about Canada.
How long does it take?
It depends on IRCC workload. IRCC updates processing times regularly on its website, so we do not promise a fixed date.
Can I keep my US or other citizenship?
Canada allows dual citizenship. Whether you keep your current citizenship depends on the other country's law, so check with its embassy or consulate before you apply.
Can I leave Canada after I apply?
Yes, if you keep your PR status, receive and answer IRCC mail and emails, usually within 30 days, and come back for the test, interview and ceremony. Tell IRCC if you leave for more than two weeks in a row.
Can I include my children?
Yes. A parent can apply for children under 18 in the same online account. A child with a Canadian parent or a parent applying at the same time does not need to meet the day count.
I have a Canadian parent. Am I already a citizen?
You may be. Children and grandchildren of Canadian citizens can be citizens without applying for a grant, and the way to confirm it is a citizenship certificate. Write to us and we will look at your family documents.
