PR Card Renewal in Canada - Application and Residency Check
A Canadian PR card is usually valid for 5 years, and you renew it yourself through IRCC. Before you apply, we count your days in Canada against the 730-day rule, prepare the application and photo, and check everything. You submit it in the Permanent Residence Portal. Our fee is CAD 500, the IRCC fee is paid separately.
Your PR card expires soon or is already expired? Write to us - we will tell you where to start.
We reply in messengers within one business day.
What we do for your PR card renewal
The PR card proves your permanent resident status when you return to Canada by plane, bus, train or boat. Your status does not expire with the card - you remain a permanent resident until an official decision is made about it. Travel without a valid card is harder, though, and the renewal application shows IRCC how much time you have spent in Canada.
That is why we start with your travel history, and only then fill out the form.
We go through your trips over the last 5 years and count your days in Canada. If you are short of 730 days, we look at whether your time abroad can count, for example time with a spouse who is a Canadian citizen.
We fill out the PR card application and the document checklist (IMM 5644), and check every answer against your passport and your record of landing or confirmation of PR.
We check the photo against IRCC requirements and prepare copies of your passport and, if needed, a police report for a lost or stolen card or a name change document.
We explain IRCC letters and help with requests for documents until you receive the card. If you need the card urgently, we check whether you qualify for urgent processing.
When you need a new PR card
You can renew the card when it expires in less than 9 months or has already expired. The card is only mailed to an address in Canada, so you must be in Canada to receive it.
Common situations
Apply when less than 9 months are left or after the expiry date. Your PR status stays in place, only the document expires.
If you are in Canada, you apply for a new card. For a lost or stolen card, include a police report or incident number if you have one.
If you spent long periods outside Canada, we first count your days and look at the risks, and only then decide whether to apply.
The card cannot be mailed abroad. To return by plane, you need a permanent resident travel document (PRTD). By car, you can use other documents accepted at the border.
How PR card renewal works
IRCC processing times change regularly, current ones are on the IRCC processing times page.
Urgent processing is possible in some situations, but even then IRCC states a minimum of 3 weeks and does not guarantee a date. Apply before you plan to travel.
Common mistakes with PR card renewal
Most problems come from timing and day counting. This is what we check before you apply.
If you have lived in Canada long enough, check whether you can already apply for citizenship. A Canadian citizen does not need a PR card at all.
