Open Work Permit in Canada - Spousal (SOWP) and Bridging (BOWP)

An open work permit lets you work for almost any employer in Canada without a job offer or LMIA. It is available only in specific situations - for some spouses of workers and students, and for permanent residence applicants waiting for a decision. We check whether you qualify and prepare the application. Our fee is CAD 300, IRCC fees are paid separately.

We reply in messengers within one business day.

What we do for your open work permit

Since January 21, 2025, IRCC has narrowed who can get a spousal open work permit. It now depends on the exact occupation of the worker or the program of the student, and dependent children of workers no longer qualify under this measure.
The bridging permit has its own conditions tied to your PR application. So the first step is always the same - we check which category, if any, fits you.

We are immigration lawyers with almost 20 years in immigration. We prepare the application and documents, and you sign and submit it in your own IRCC account.

Eligibility check

We check the worker's occupation and TEER category, the student's program, or the stage of your PR application, and the status of the person applying.

Relationship and status documents

We prepare proof of marriage or common-law partnership, the principal's work or study permit, and proof of enrolment or employment.

Application

We fill out the work permit application, answer the IRCC questionnaire the right way for your category and check the document checklist.

Follow-up

We explain IRCC letters and help with requests for documents. If your status is expiring, we plan the timing so you stay legal.

Who can get an open work permit

The most common categories are below. Other groups, such as PGWP holders and some vulnerable workers, have their own rules.

Main categories

Spouse of a worker
The worker is in a TEER 0 or 1 job, or one of the selected TEER 2 or 3 occupations, and their permit is valid for at least 16 more months when the spouse applies. Other rules apply if the worker is on a pathway to PR.
Spouse of a student
The student is in a master's program of 16 months or longer, a doctoral program, an eligible professional degree such as medicine, law, engineering or nursing, or a listed program.
Sponsored spouse in Canada
A spouse or partner sponsored from inside Canada can apply after IRCC confirms the PR application is complete. See spousal sponsorship.
Bridging open work permit
For a principal applicant in Express Entry, PNP and some other programs whose work permit is expiring, after the PR application has passed the completeness check.

How the open work permit application works

IRCC processing times change regularly, current ones are on the IRCC processing times page. The official rules are on the IRCC open work permit page.

01
Consultation
We look at your family, permits and plans, and tell you which category fits. A consultation costs CAD 150.
02
Category check
We confirm the occupation code, program or PR stage against the current IRCC lists.
03
Documents
We prepare the application and supporting documents. You review and sign.
04
Submission
You submit online in your IRCC account and pay the fees. Applicants outside Canada may need biometrics.
05
Decision
IRCC issues the open work permit, usually tied to the period of the principal's work or study permit. We explain the conditions printed on it.

Most open work permits are applied for from inside Canada. If you are in Canada, you need valid status, maintained status after applying to extend on time, or eligibility for restoration.

Common reasons open work permits are refused

Problems usually come from the rules that changed in 2025 and from timing. This is what we check before you apply.

The worker's occupation is not on the eligible TEER list
The worker's permit has less than 16 months left
The student's program does not qualify after January 21, 2025
BOWP applied for before the PR application passed completeness
Status in Canada expired before the application was filed

Finished your studies in Canada? You may need a post-graduation work permit instead.

Answers to frequently asked questions

What is an open work permit?
A work permit that lets you work for almost any employer in Canada. You don't need a job offer, and the employer doesn't need an LMIA. Employers on the non-compliant list and some adult services are excluded.
Who can get a spousal open work permit in 2026?
Spouses of workers in TEER 0 or 1 jobs or selected TEER 2 and 3 occupations, whose permit is valid for at least 16 more months, spouses of students in eligible programs, and spouses of some PR applicants. The rules changed on January 21, 2025.
Can the spouse of an international student work in Canada?
Yes, if the student is in a master's program of 16 months or longer, a doctoral program, an eligible professional degree or a listed program, and has a valid study permit.
Can our children get open work permits too?
Not under the measure for spouses of high-skilled workers since January 21, 2025. Children of some PR applicants and pathway programs can still qualify.
What is a bridging open work permit and when can I apply?
It lets a PR applicant keep working while waiting for the decision. You can apply when you live in Canada, are the principal applicant, have a valid or maintained work permit status, and your PR application has passed the completeness check.
How much does an open work permit cost?
Our fee is CAD 300. IRCC fees are CAD 255 - the CAD 155 work permit fee and the CAD 100 open work permit holder fee, plus biometrics if IRCC asks.
How long does it take?
It depends on where you apply and IRCC workload. IRCC updates processing times regularly on its website.
Can I extend an open work permit?
Often yes, if you still meet the same conditions, for example the student is still studying full-time and not in the last term. We check the extension rules for your category.
