Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) - Eligibility and Application

After graduating from an eligible Canadian college or university, you can get an open work permit for up to 3 years. We check your program, field of study and language results against the current rules and prepare the application within the 180-day deadline. Our fee is CAD 500, the IRCC fee is paid separately.

Eligibility check before the deadline
Language and field of study requirements
Application from inside or outside Canada

Graduating soon or already finished your program? Write to us - we will check your PGWP eligibility.

We reply in messengers within one business day.

What we do for your PGWP

The PGWP is an open work permit for graduates of eligible designated learning institutions (DLIs). Graduating does not make you eligible automatically. Since November 1, 2024, most applicants also need language test results, and many college graduates need a program from the eligible field of study list.
If one requirement is missed, IRCC refuses, and by then the 180 days may be over. So we check everything before you apply.

We are immigration lawyers with almost 20 years in immigration. We prepare the application and documents, and you sign and submit it in your own IRCC account.

Program check

We check that your school and program are PGWP-eligible, that the program lasted at least 8 months, and that you studied full-time.

Language and field of study

We compare your test results with CLB 7 or CLB 5, depending on the program, and check your CIP code against the field of study list if it applies to you.

Application

We prepare the online application with proof of graduation, transcript, language results and passport, and check how long your PGWP can be.

While you wait

We explain when you can keep working full-time during processing, and what to do about a visitor visa if you plan to travel.

How long your PGWP can be

The length depends on the program level and length, and is limited by your passport expiry date. You can get a PGWP only once.

Common cases

Bachelor's, master's or PhD
Language CLB 7 in all four skills. No field of study requirement. A master's program of at least 8 months can give a 3-year PGWP.
College or polytechnic program
Language CLB 5 in all four skills. If you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024, the program must be in an eligible field of study.
Program of 8 months to 2 years
The PGWP can be up to the length of the program. A program of 2 years or more can give a 3-year PGWP.
Program shorter than 8 months
Not eligible for a PGWP. If you completed two eligible programs of at least 8 months each, their lengths can be combined.

How the PGWP application works

IRCC processing times change regularly, current ones are on the IRCC processing times page. The official rules are on the IRCC PGWP page.

01
Consultation
We look at your program, dates and test results, and tell you whether and when to apply. A consultation costs CAD 150.
02
Eligibility check
We check the DLI, program length, full-time study, language level and, if needed, the CIP code of your program.
03
Application
We prepare the application and documents. You submit it within 180 days of the confirmation that you completed your program.
04
Working while you wait
If your study permit was valid when you applied and you met the work rules as a student, you can work full-time until a decision.
05
Decision
IRCC issues the work permit for the period your passport allows. If the passport expires earlier, you can extend the PGWP later.

If your study permit expired before you applied, you have 90 days to apply for the PGWP and restore your student status, with a separate restoration fee. You cannot work until the permit is approved in that case.

Common reasons PGWP applications are refused

Most refusals come from the program itself or a missed deadline. This is what we check before you apply.

Program or school not eligible for a PGWP
Application filed after the 180-day deadline
Language results below CLB 7 or CLB 5
College program outside the eligible field of study list
Part-time study during semesters other than the last one

Planning to stay permanently? Canadian work experience on a PGWP often leads to Express Entry through the Canadian Experience Class.

Answers to frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for a PGWP?
Graduates of a PGWP-eligible program at a designated learning institution that lasted at least 8 months, studied full-time and apply within 180 days. Since November 1, 2024, most applicants also need language results, and some need an eligible field of study.
What language level do I need for a PGWP?
CLB 7 (or NCLC 7 in French) in all four skills for university graduates, CLB 5 (NCLC 5) for college and other non-university programs. Applications filed before November 1, 2024 are exempt.
Do I need to meet the field of study requirement?
Not if you have a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, or applied for your study permit before November 1, 2024. Other graduates need a program whose CIP code is on the eligible list. IRCC says it will not change the list in 2026.
How long is a PGWP valid?
Up to the length of your program if it was 8 months to 2 years, and up to 3 years for programs of 2 years or more and for master's degrees. It cannot be longer than your passport.
When should I apply?
Within 180 days of the confirmation that you completed your program, and your study permit must have been valid at some point during those 180 days.
Can I work while my PGWP application is processed?
Yes, full-time, if your study permit was valid when you applied, you completed your program and you followed the off-campus work rules as a student.
How much does a PGWP cost?
Our fee is CAD 500. The IRCC fee is CAD 255, and biometrics are CAD 85 if IRCC asks for them.
Can I extend my PGWP?
Only in one case - if your passport expired before the full PGWP period. Then you apply on paper after you get a new passport. You cannot get a second PGWP after another program.
Can my spouse work in Canada too?
If your PGWP is approved, your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit. We check which rules apply to your family at the consultation.
