How to Move to the UK from the US - Visa Routes for Americans
A US passport gets you into the UK as a visitor, and to live there you need a visa with a clear purpose. For Americans, the realistic routes are a sponsored job, a talent or graduate visa that needs no employer, study, a British partner or an innovative business. Below is what each route requires, what it costs in 2026, which popular routes are closed to US citizens, and how long it takes to settle for good.

Visiting vs Moving - the ETA
US citizens do not need a visa for a short trip, but they do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It costs £20, and the decision usually comes within a day, at most within 3 working days. It lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Since February 25, 2026 airlines refuse boarding to travellers who have neither an ETA nor a visa.
With an ETA you can stay up to 6 months per visit for tourism, family, business meetings or short courses. You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company, and you cannot live in the UK through back-to-back visits. Moving there takes a visa with a specific purpose, and for most of them you apply online and prove your identity at a visa application centre or through the UK Immigration ID Check app.
One thing works in your favour. US nationals are on the list of countries exempt from the English language requirement for Skilled Worker, Student and Family visas. That saves you a test that applicants from most other countries have to take.

Skilled Worker Visa - Moving With a UK Job
This is the main work route, and it starts with the employer, not with you. You need a job offer from a UK employer licensed by the Home Office, and the employer issues you a certificate of sponsorship.

The bar went up in 2025 and 2026.
- Salary. At least £41,700 a year or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher. Lower floors of £33,400 and £37,500 apply in some cases, for example for jobs on the immigration salary list or for applicants with a relevant PhD.
- Skill level. For new applicants the job generally has to be in a "higher skilled" occupation, at degree level. Since July 22, 2025, most "medium skilled" jobs qualify only if they are on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list.
- English. The level rose to B2 on January 8, 2026, but as a US national you are exempt.
- Savings. £1,270 in your account, unless your employer certifies that it will cover your first month.
The visa is issued for up to 5 years and can be extended. Application fees from outside the UK are £819 for up to 3 years and £1,618 for more than 3 years, lower for jobs on the immigration salary list. Requirements and fees are on the GOV.UK Skilled Worker page, and what the employer has to prepare is on our Skilled Worker visa page.
In practice the hard part is finding the employer. Many UK companies do not hold a sponsor licence, and getting one costs them money and around 8 weeks. So look first at employers that already hold a licence. The Home Office publishes the register of licensed sponsors.
Global Talent and High Potential Individual - No Job Offer Needed
Two routes let you move without an employer. They suit very different people.
Global Talent is for leaders and potential leaders in academia and research, arts and culture, and digital technology. Most people first get an endorsement from an approved body. Winners of a prize on the official prestigious prize list can skip that step. The total fee is £766, paid as £561 for the endorsement and £205 for the visa. You do not need a job offer. The visa lasts up to 5 years at a time, and settlement is possible after 3 or 5 years depending on your field and how you qualified. More on the evidence on our Global Talent visa page.
High Potential Individual (HPI) is for recent graduates of top universities outside the UK. Your degree must be from a university on the government's list and awarded in the last 5 years. The current list for degrees awarded from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026 includes 33 American universities, among them Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Columbia, UC Berkeley, Michigan and UT Austin. The visa lasts 2 years, or 3 with a PhD, and costs £880.
HPI has limits. It cannot be extended, you can only get it once, and its time does not count toward settlement. Use it to get into the UK job market and switch to Skilled Worker before it expires.

Student and Graduate Visas
The Student visa needs an offer from a licensed UK school and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You apply within 6 months of getting the CAS. The fee from outside the UK is £558. On top of tuition for the first year, you show living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to 9 months.
After a UK degree, the Graduate visa lets you stay and work without a sponsor. It lasts 2 years if you apply on or before December 31, 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after January 1, 2027. PhD graduates get 3 years. The fee is £937. The Graduate visa is only available to people who studied in the UK on a Student visa, so it is not an option straight from the US.
Studying makes sense if you want the degree anyway. As a pure immigration plan it is expensive. Details are on our UK student visa page.
Family Visa - Joining a British Partner
If your spouse or partner is a British citizen or has settled status, you can apply for a family visa. The main condition is money. Together you have to show at least £29,000 a year in income, and if you cannot, the earliest settlement moves from 5 to 10 years.
The fee from outside the UK is £2,064, and the decision usually takes about 12 weeks. The first visa is granted for 2 years and 9 months, then you extend. Settlement is possible after 5 continuous years on this route. Rules for children and other relatives are on the GOV.UK family visa page and on our UK family visas page.
Innovator Founder - Starting a Business
This visa is for people who want to start a new business in the UK, not buy into an existing one. The idea must be new, innovative, viable and scalable, and an approved endorsing body has to sign off on it.
There is no fixed minimum investment. You show the endorsing body that you have enough funding and where it comes from. The visa fee is £1,357, the endorsement is £1,000, and each check-in meeting with the endorsing body, after 12 and 24 months, costs £500. The visa lasts 3 years, and you can apply to settle after 3 years.
Be realistic here. A solid business that does what others on the market already do will not qualify.
Routes Americans Ask About but Cannot Use
Two routes come up a lot in American forums, and neither is open to US citizens.
- UK Ancestry visa. A British grandparent is not enough by itself. The visa is for Commonwealth citizens and certain British nationals, and the US is not in the Commonwealth. If you hold a second citizenship from a Commonwealth country, such as Canada or Australia, check it through that passport.
- Youth Mobility Scheme. The scheme covers Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and a few other countries. The US is not on the list.
What It Costs - Fees, NHS Surcharge and Taxes
The visa fee is only part of the bill. Almost every long-term visa also requires the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), paid upfront for the whole visa period.

| Visa | Application fee | IHS per year |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker, up to 3 years | £819 | £1,035 |
| Global Talent | £766 | £1,035 |
| High Potential Individual | £880 | £1,035 |
| Student | £558 | £776 |
| Graduate | £937 | £1,035 |
| Family (partner) | £2,064 | £1,035 |
| Innovator Founder | £1,357 | £1,035 |
The surcharge gives you NHS care free of charge from the day your visa starts. Prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests are still paid. For a 3-year Skilled Worker visa, the surcharge alone is £3,105 per person, and partners and children pay their own fees and surcharge. These fees apply since April 8, 2026, and the fee table from October 8, 2026 left them unchanged.
On taxes, UK residents normally pay UK tax on their income from abroad too, while the US keeps taxing its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live.
How Long Until You Can Stay for Good
Permanent residence in the UK is called indefinite leave to remain (ILR). Under the current rules, Skilled Worker and family visa holders can apply after 5 years, and Global Talent and Innovator Founder holders after 3 years in some cases. The ILR application fee is £3,226.
These timelines may change. In November 2025 the government opened a consultation on earned settlement, which says settlement will no longer be granted automatically after a fixed period. As of October 2026 no final decision on the waiting periods has been published. One change is already set - from March 2027 most settlement applicants will need the same higher English level that most work visas have required since January 2026. Check the rules in force when you apply, not when you move.
