Answering frequently asked questions from lottery participants
I heard there are “schemes” to guarantee winning the Green Card Lottery. Is this true?
No, the selection of winners is completely random. It cannot be influenced. Any promises of a guaranteed win are a scam.
How will I know about the lottery results? Will I receive a notification?
No, no one sends out any notifications. You need to monitor the results on the website https://dvprogram.state.gov/ using your application number. If we submit your application for participation in the lottery, then, of course, we will check the results and inform you of everything.
What are the deadlines for submitting an application to participate in the lottery?
Applications will be accepted from October to November of the current year.
When to expect lottery results?
The first results appear at the beginning of May next year.
What happens if I lose my participant application number?
It can be restored through the official lottery website. The number will be sent to the e-mail you specified in the application. Therefore, access to the e-mail must not be lost.
What is the deadline for submitting documents for a visa after winning the lottery?
There are no exact deadlines, but it is better not to delay and fill out the DS-260 form as soon as possible. Keep in mind that the visa must be obtained before September 30 of the following year. And do not forget that the number of visas is limited – there may not be enough for everyone.
If I win the lottery and want to apply for a visa, what mandatory fees will I need to pay?
First of all, these are official fees: before the interview you pay $330, and before entering the US – $220. In addition, you will need to undergo a medical examination (about $200).
If I win the lottery, am I guaranteed to get a visa and a Green Card?
No. Winning the lottery is not a guarantee of moving. The winner can be disqualified for various reasons. And often this happens due to errors in the application for participation: not listing all of your children, indicating the wrong passport, submitting inappropriate photos.
Can I apply on behalf of a child?
If your child meets the DV program requirements (was born in an eligible country and has completed high school), he or she can apply on their own. But if they win, they will not be able to bring you to the United States with them.
If I make a mistake in my application, can it be corrected?
Unfortunately, no. An error in the application cannot be corrected. Therefore, you need to be extremely meticulous when filling out the questionnaire.
